King County work planned:
As you know, King County Traffic Engineering section has been involved in pedestrian safety and traffic calming operations along Klahanie Blvd. One of the ongoing issues is street tree conflicts with signs and street luminaries. During their visit they identified several trees that need to be removed and a number of others that needed only minor tree branch pruning to improve sight distance, visibility and street lighting. I know the current approved street tree plan, calls for the removal of many street trees with a "phased-in" approach for "replanting" in the next few years. As part of the pedestrian improvement (particularly at crosswalks), King County Roads needs to remove and/or prune a handful of these trees. They marked approximately 18 trees for removal and about 40 to be pruned. Because this work is associated with King County improvements, it will be done by county forces and county contractor.
This tree work is a component of the county's pedestrian safety and lighting improvements along Klahanie Blvd. Great care was taken to identify only those trees necessary for removal. Luckily, most of the trees are smaller trees, not the large London Planes. The tree work is expected to take 2-3 days including cleanup. Within the next few weeks, the county will conduct an on-site meeting with their maintenance division and tree contractor to discuss the work. Then, Klahanie will be contacted with the exact start date. The county is hoping to complete the tree work by the end of September, so it will be done before their Traffic section begins their safety improvements (lights, signs, flasher poles, etc.) later in the year. |
